“Extant Fables”, Bedel Tiscareño
Show Dates: September 12th – October 11th, 2015
Please join us for Bedel Tiscareño’s first solo exhibition with AHA fine Art. Extant Fables, opening Saturday, September 12th, 2015 from 6-9pm at AHA Fine Art, 139 Eldridge St., NYC. Extant Fables is a compilation of sculpture groupings, solitary sculptures and paintings. “The figures in this exhibition, incorporating elements of disparate sources ranging from African minkisi figures (Central African power figures) to Spanish polychrome religious sculpture, are the imagined actors of nonexistent stories. While the absence of a clear narrative for such colorful characters as Henry (shown left) appears counterintuitive, the void created by this lack of structure allows for the viewer’s intuitive compass to create compositions made from all of the associations and assumptions that have slowly and silently accreted to the mind.”
As in Tlaloc (shown right) Tiscareño uses “the human figure as a framework of infinite possibilities for
content and narrative that is viscerally connected to each of us” The well-established tradition of figurative sculpture in almost all ethnic cultures throughout the world, connects us to a dialogue that demands contribution and adamantly opposes resolution. Often times, the piece developed as a lone sculpture will find its way into a composition consisting of multiple figures.
The content of his work is conjured by historical and ahistorical, non-linear narratives that examine the evolution of the status quo and our explicit or implicit compliance in upholding its institutions. Much of the content is generated by a combination of world history and an intuitive work process, with a portion of it, namely the autobiographical component, being responsible for any discernible levity, albeit filtered through a dark lens. By taking standard historical archetypes and grafting onto them the contemporary mythologies generated by today’s media blitz, his work creates compositions that comment on as well as criticize today’s social mores.
The materials in Tiscareño’s work derive from various sources and are used either to inform the content of the work or to resolve aesthetic or compositional issues. As he generically labels the materials in his work as “mixed media,” the actual materials include, but are not limited to: parts of stuffed animals, epoxy resin, polyurethane resin, wood, porcelain, found objects (fabrics), and various types of surface paint (e.g. acrylic, oil, paint, nail polish, flash cement, etc.)
Tiscareño is a painter and sculptor from Las Vegas, Nevada. His undergraduate studies began at Otis/Parsons School of Art and Design in Los Angeles, California, which later led to Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington, and then to the School of Visual Arts (“SVA”) in New York, NY where, in 1998, he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in painting. After graduating from SVA, Tiscareño was employed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art where he served as the supervising technician for its largest curatorial department, European Sculpture and Decorative Arts. While there, Tiscareño further developed his aesthetic sensibilities as his occupation at the Met placed him in close proximity to some of the world’s greatest masterpieces. Tiscareño later went on to pursue an advanced degree in law at the City University of New York School of Law. In February of 2014, after passing the New York bar exam, he was admitted to practice law in the Second Judicial Department of the State of New York. Tiscareño has had 4 solo shows prior to Extant Fables in NYC, most recently at Broadway Gallery, NYC and consistently exhibits with AHA Fine Art. Tiscareño currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY with his wife and four year old son.
